WOOD-cooplearningIn Ms. Rice’s fifth grade classroom, she encourages her students to work cooperatively to foster a love of learning. Students are given opportunities to teach each other, share what they know, how they know it, and why it works. The cooperative learning model that she uses in her classroom manifests in a variety of ways. Students play Fact Frenzy games in a boys v. girls fashion; students are paired with one another to work in partners; or students are placed in groups with varying abilities. Independent work is still utilized but it is limited, as she believes that “cooperative learning not only allows for students to learn to love learning, but it also encourages leadership, team work, peer mentoring, motivation, and self-awareness.”
